The story centers on a grown-up, Lucius (Paul Mescal), who lives peacefully with his family in Numidia.
This peace is shattered when General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) invades, forcing Lucius into slavery.
Inspired by the legendary Maximus (Russell Crowe), Lucius becomes a gladiator, determined to challenge the reign of Emperors Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) and Geta (Joseph Quinn).
Upon returning to Rome as a gladiator, Lucius discovers his mother, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), is in love with Acacius, adding a personal twist to his vendetta.
Gladiator II continues the legacy of the first film. Lucius, who appeared as a child in the 2000 Gladiator, is the son of Lucilla and nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).
Commodus, who murdered his father, Marcus Aurelius, to seize the throne, was ultimately defeated by Maximus.
Maximus saved Lucius and his mother while avenging his own family, leaving a strong impression on young Lucius.
Lucilla sent her son away to Numidia between the first and second films, leading to a rift between them 20 years later.
Ridley Scott returns to direct and produce Gladiator II alongside producers Michael Pruss, Doug Wick, and Lucy Fisher.
David Scarpa wrote the screenplay, and Paramount will handle the film’s distribution.

Universal Pictures moved Wicked’s release date to November 22, 2024, setting up a direct competition with Gladiator II.
This is similar to the 2023 “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, where Greta Gerwig’s Barbie competed with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
The clash created a storm of publicity and benefited both movies, making them the year’s biggest films.
Theater owners are hopeful for another successful dual release.
